Presents, The Expert At The Card Table!

One of the more interesting things about my close up card work is that it involves a rather long study of both the techniques used by a magician. And techniques used by a card sharp. This kind of entertainment is very popular because many people today like to play cards. And I think that many people that play cards have a dream about being able to go into a casino or a game somewhere and beat the odds and be that big winner.

Below are a few classic cheating methods that have most likely been used by the card sharp to take advantage at the card table. Since the days of Erdnase. Also take the time to watch a few videos where I demonstrate the ability of card control using both the jog shuffle and table riffle shuffle techniques.

Enjoy!

A good second deal is a handy move for a magician. But it is also a handy get the money move for a card shark. A magician like Jack Pyle or myself would use a second deal to entertain an audience. And a card cheat might use a second deal to take advantage at the card table.

I remember doing a hypnotic show in a bar saloon many years ago. I went back where the office was to get my check and then there was a table full of people playing cards. I was asked to sit in and after a few hands I noticed the deck was marked. They were playing poker with two wild cards the ace of spades and the two of spades. If a player gets any one of these two cards in their hand - they get half the pot. That was a deck with only two marked cards - the ace and the two. After I left and I was driving home I guessed that someone in the game was using a second deal to control one of the two cards at the deal.

Using a second deal the cheat can peak and use it to give a player a good card or a bad card. This could be useful to take advantage in many games of chance including 5 card stud, poker, blackjack or the popular game today Texas Holdem.

Another move a magician like me would use to entertain an audience is the bottom deal. Like the second deal it could be also another get the money move for the card cheat.

Pictured above is me performing the bottom deal. A card cheat might use this to cheat at the card table by getting some good cards like two or three of a kind to the bottom of the deck. Then while dealing out the hands, say five poker hands he deals himself the two or three good cards off the bottom while he is dealing out the five poker hands to each of the players.

And like the second deal the bottom deal can also be used to give a player good cards to make a hand, or bad cards to bust up a hand, depending on the cheat and the situation.

False cuts like the one pictured above. False shuffles, shifting the cut after the shuffle are all part of magic and controlling the needed cards at the card table. I have been asked this question often at the shows I do, can cards be controlled at the card table?

My answer is yes they can!

The first technique I read about controlling cards using the jog shuffle was in the classic book Expert at the card table. I hope the reader will take the time to view some of the video on this page. Because I use a lot of different ways to run up poker hands using the jog shuffle. Just check out some of the video that is on this web page.

As I remember performing close up card magic and doing some card shark magic and poker deals. At a meeting of the three sheeters entertainers club. That was meeting for a banquet at Ricks Restaurant In Summit IL. Back in the 70s. My Dad was a member of this entertainment club as well as many of the top Chicago Magicians. Like, Jack Pyle, Don Alan, Frank Everheart and of course Jay Marshall.

I did several card tricks then I did the shell game with my original pea in the shot glass ending.

After doing my cold cutting of the aces from a shuffled deck of cards. And then doing a poker deal where I cull and stack a full house from the same shuffled deck. Then doing the kicker of dealing out six hands and my helper getting the full house and I get the four aces. Then ending the demonstration with three card monte.

A few days later my Dad told me that I knocked that audience of entertainers and magicians cold that night. And my dad said something to me that I will never forget. Something that I heard him say to another magician, Jack Pyle. My Dad said that if I had a bit of larceny in me that I could make a very good living as a gambler or a card sharp. However I am glad I am a magician not a gambler or a card sharp.

Like many magicians I choose not to play cards. There is a very old saying in magic. Gamble and lose they would question my ability. But Gamble and win they would question my honesty and integrity. So having said that I choose not to play cards and choose the higher ground of entertaining audiences with a deck of cards.

I have to say that over the years the ideas that I use to do this kind of entertainment with a deck of cards have stood the test of time. My shell game routine. My three card monte routine. And my punch cull work have really stood the test of time and have worked very well under just about the hardest performing conditions in the many venues that I have done shows in over the years.

I have often said that the Molinari cull of Jimmy Cards Molinari has become the backbone of my card work. Just as the punch cull has over the years. But at this time I must add the triumph cull to that list of great moves that has become the backbone of my card work. Because at this time I have never seen a riffle shuffle that is as easy and less top heavy that I can stack, cull, cut the aces from a shuffled deck. And use in so many ways in my close up table work when I choose to use a riffle shuffle.

To cull, cut, stack the four aces on the fly from a shuffled deck of cards.
